Project Description

The Tic-Tac-Toe Chicken Challenge (2001)

“The Tic-Tac-Toe Chicken Challenge”  by Bunky Boger challenges visitors to play tic-tac-toe against a live chicken. The chicken is placed in a cubicle and by pecking at a touchscreen monitor it determines its next move for the game. The visitor operates a touchscreen monitor outside of the cubicle. Supposedly the chicken is trained to play tic-tac-toe using reward based training methods developed by B.F. Skinner, but it is more likely a computer is calculating the next move, and the chicken is merely triggering this move by pecking at the screen. Because a panel is occluding the actions of the chicken this is difficult to verify. The chicken always makes the first move, and when using the right tactics the player who makes the first move at tic-tac-toe always either wins or draws.
